Using the search engine

Boolean searches

When searching for more than one word or phrase, remember to separate each with a space. eg:

children kids - This will find all images with the words children OR kids OR both in them.

If you want to find images that contain both words, you should use the + sign to signify this:

+boats +sea - this will find images that only contains boats AND sea, remember to put the + sign in front of both words.

You can also use the minus sign:

+"market stall" -asia - this will bring up images of market stall's NOT in Asia.

Searching for phrases

If you want to search for a phrase or perhaps a name of a place that has a space in it, then you may want to use double quotes to make the search better, eg:

"market stall" - this will find images that have keywords where market appears next to stall.

+"market stall" +india - this will find images that have keywords where the term "market stall" appears as a keyword in images that are taken in India.

Looking left and looking right

Searching for an image where a person is looking or facing in a particular direction? You can find images that fit this criteria by using the keywords like this:

+"looking left" +india - this will find pictures of people looking left in India

Portrait and landscape

If you are looking for images that are specifically portrait or landscape in shape then you can use the radio buttons beneath the search box - go to the search page and they should appear under the search box, if you do not select one of these the search will find both.

Using *

You can also use the * character in words. For example if you are looking for images of fish or fishing or perhaps fishermen you can search for all of them using this:

fish*

Misspellings or typos

Always double-check your entries to make sure your keywords do not contain misspellings or typos.
